R.W. Martin employees, Lani Bower, Kathy Bedell and Becky Wise are three of a four-member team who participated in this past weekend’s Breast Cancer 3-Day national philanthropic event.
The Sole Sisters, also including Anne Coyne of Kent, Ohio, raised a more than $9,200 to support breast cancer research, education, and community outreach programs. Donations were received from team members’ families, friends and co-workers. They also raised money by selling home made muffins and pink ribbon sugar cookies.
Shawn and Susan Martin were major contributors in helping the team reach their goal and in supporting The Sole Sisters and the Susan G. Komen Foundation in their efforts.
The ladies began training in April, starting with short walks, two days per-week and extended walks on the weekends, gradually increasing their distance. They also attended a nutrition/hydration workshop and a shoe fitting to be sure they were fitted with proper footwear.
“I figured it out,” said Wise. “With all of the miles I’ve put in for training, I could have walked from here to Georgia.”
At the end of the walk, The Sole Sisters put in a total of 645 miles.
The money raised for the Breast Cancer 3-Day goes directly where it is needed the most: breast cancer research, education and community outreach.
The 2006 event raised $61 million through donations, contributions and sponsorships. More than 71% of those funds were invested in breast cancer research, education and community outreach. As the primary beneficiary, Susan G. Komen for the Cure receives 85% of net proceeds, with the remaining 15% going to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day has raised more than $220 million since its inception in 2003.
